Search for ultrahigh-energy tau neutrinos with IceCube

2012

The first dedicated search for ultrahigh-energy (UHE) tau neutrinos of astrophysical origin was performed using the IceCube detector in its 22-string configuration with an instrumented volume of roughly 0.25  km3. The search also had sensitivity to UHE electron and muon neutrinos. After application of all selection criteria to approximately 200 live-days of data, we expect a background of 0.60±0.19(stat)+0.56−0.58(syst) events and observe three events, which after inspection, emerge as being compatible with background but are kept in the final sample. Therefore, we set an upper limit on neutrinos of all flavors from UHE astrophysical sources at 90% C.L. of E2νΦ90(νx)<16.3×10−8  GeV cm−2…

Red and Far-Red Fluorescence Emission Retrieval from Airborne High-Resolution Spectra Collected by the Hyplant-Fluo Sensor

2018

The contribution presents the development and testing of a fluorescence retrieval scheme based on the ESA's FLuorescence EXplorer mission concept. The algorithm employs on a coupled surface-atmosphere forward model at oxygen absorption bands: i) the atmospheric effect is computed by MODTRAN5; ii) the surface reflectance and fluorescence are modeled by means of the Spectral Fitting approach. The algorithm, previously tested on numerical simulations, was further implemented and optimized to process real observations collected by the FLEX airborne demonstrator HyPlant. The retrieval scheme has been tested on a number of flight lines collected in several locations, different ecosystems types, a…

The HITRAN2016 molecular spectroscopic database

2017

This paper describes the contents of the 2016 edition of the HITRAN molecular spectroscopic compilation. The new edition replaces the previous HITRAN edition of 2012 and its updates during the intervening years. The HITRAN molecular absorption compilation is composed of five major components: the traditional line-by-line spectroscopic parameters required for high-resolution radiative-transfer codes, infrared absorption cross-sections for molecules not yet amenable to representation in a line-by-line form, collision-induced absorption data, aerosol indices of refraction, and general tables such as partition sums that apply globally to the data. The new HITRAN is greatly extended in terms of …

Lack of correlation between apoptosis and DNA single-strand breaks in X-irradiated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the course of ageing

1998

The dependence on age of both the basal and the X-radiation-induced levels of apoptosis was examined in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). In the same samples, the base value and the extent of induced DNA single-strand breaks were determined, using a sensitive and fast microplate assay. PBMC were isolated from blood of donors of various age groups (20-30, 40-60 and > 70 years of age) and X-irradiated ex vivo using a 6 MV linear accelerator to give a total exposure of 4 Gy. The mean basal levels of apoptosis in PBMC from donors in the 40-60 year age group and the > 70 year age group were found to be only slightly higher (by 20-10%) compared to that of the 20-30 year age group, …

Sylow Normalizers and Brauer Character Degrees

2000

Suppose that G is a finite group. In this note, we show that a local condition about Sylow normalizers is equivalent to a global condition on the degrees of certain irreducible Brauer characters of G. Theorem A. Let G be a finite ”p; q•-solvable group, and let Q ∈ SylqG‘ and P ∈ SylpG‘. Then every irreducible p-Brauer character of G of q′degree has p′-degree if and only if NGQ‘ is contained in some G-conjugate of NGP‘. Theorem A needs a solvability hypothesis. If p = 7, then the irreducible p-Brauer characters of the group G = PSL2; 27‘ have degrees ”1; 13; 26; 28•. If we set q = 2, then each q′-degree is also a p′-degree.

Sunlight-induced functionalisation reactions of heteroaromatic bases with aldehydes in the presence of TiO2: A hypothesis on the mechanism

2007

In previous studies we reported a new photocatalytic system involving polycrystalline TiO2 for the selective functionalisation of heteroaromatic bases with ethers and amides. In order to extend the applications of this new reaction and to better understand the mechanism involved, we have examined aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes as acyl radical sources for the nucleophilic addition to protonated N-heteroarenes in acetonitrile as the solvent and TiO2/H2O2 as the photocatalytic system. Acyl radicals may undergo decarbonylation to yield the corresponding alkyl radicals. Acyl/alkyl derivative ratios depend on the nature of the aldehydes, and present a different distribution from that obtained i…

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Rapid Elemental Analysis of Drillcore

2013

Abstract The elemental and mineralogical contents of rock drillcore can be analyzed using a variety of methods. For efficient exploration the characterization of the drillcore should be performed rapidly, so that the further drillings can be better planned and unnecessary costs can be reduced. In this paper, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is studied as a potential rapid on-line method for automated elemental analysis of drillcore. The method is based on a pulsed laser beam that transforms a small volume of the sample into plasma. Individual elements in the plasma have characteristic emission patterns detectable by a spectrometer. Based on the measured spectra the amount of diff…

An electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometric study of the gas-phase stabilities and fragmentation ofN-alky…

2006

Five N-alkylated ammonium resorcarene derivatives, differing either in the nitrogen atom or in the lower rim alkyl chain, were studied using electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The main purpose was to clarify the fragmentation and the relative stabilities of the protonated molecules by collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments. The results indicate that fragmentation of the upper rim alkyl amino substituents at the 2-position occurs readily. Variation in the gas-phase stabilities of these molecules was also observed. In addition, the proposed fragmentation pathways are depicted.
